I was just wondering if any other sales managers have been faced with a scenario like this. I would love some input on this as I might definitely start rethinking my hiring strategy when employing sales personnel in the near future , regardless of how shallow this may sound.
I have two sales rep ladies in my sales department who travel to potential clients to promotes our product in the hope of making enough sales to reach their sales target each month.
I’ll give the two ladies aliases to make it easier on the eyes when reading. Lady number one I will call Grace and lady number two Tina.
Now Grace is a very “plain Jane”. Nothing strikingly attractive about her, but she is always well presented and definitely has the “gift of gab”. She knows her products back to front and is also extremely intelligent. She is a bit of a “nerd” actually. (LOL) None the less a very pleasant person.
Tina on the other hand is the complete opposite of Grace. Gorgeous , blue eyed, brunette with the typical hour glass figure. Looks to die for of course. She reminds me allot of Carmen Electra. Sorry to say that she is not that intelligent and definitely not blessed with the “gift of gab” like Grace, but is still well presented and your typical sales rep.
What surprises me each month about the two ladies having to reach sales targets is that Grace really ahs to sell and promote the product before a client would even consider making a purchase. She struggles to make sales targets, well not struggles, but really has to work hard to make taget.
Where as Tina seems to just enter a room and the product is sold. She hardly ever has to put any effort into her sales pitches.
Now my burning question is ? What does this tell me? MMMMMMMM........

I used to think it was all about looks. I was successful in my mid to late twenties and used to go around strutting my stuff! Here we are almost 30 years on, I’m bald, pot bellied and no-one gives me a second look (certainly not Carmen Electra lookalikes!), but my wife still loves me and just 2 years ago I brought the company I was working for a record breaking order!

Tom Bird’s excellent post yesterday says it’s all about ATTITUDE and I couldn’t agree more.

I need to know more. Send me their pictures!
All kidding aside I would like to know each sales persons territory.Does one frequent small to mid size organizations and the other large size companies. What kind of leads do each receive?Do they generate their own leads. If the company generate the leads what is the attitude of the one handing out the assignments? If Tina has the desire to land the big accounts and Grace does not I want to know why Grace fears the big account and do what I can do to help her.
I think there is more to the story.

We just had abeautiful blonde brown eyed lady come ot our company to talk with us concerning our retirement fund. This is a small comapny yet there is well over a million dollars to switch. This person ahd no idea of her audience and did not address the presentation to our needs, wants. I counted ten times before I finally gave up counting this quote those in their 20's or 30"s . Taking a closer look around the meeting room a huge indicator ,we have no one in their 20's or 30's. The meeting was to cover switching to thier company not starting a retirement fund.

The company received the account due to the brand name of the company and had nothing to do with the sales rep.The one major problem I have with this company not one from that organization seemed to care enough to discover how effective this sales rep was. They are a results oriented company that does not know why their clients buy.Do you want this type of sales rep representing your company?

Looks, yep I am a prize in that department.Blonde,, green eyed slightly over weight matching the pot belly and do enjoy a nice smile and a wink. The hitch in my ste has long gone and now there is structure and meaning. Give me substance with meaning over the jumping up and down catching the eye any day.

I hate to admit it, but looks do definitely play a significant part in face to face selling with a male buyer and female seller (Not saying it's not true the other way round, but this is where I've seen it in action most).

All other things being roughly equal, a really attractive, young female sales person will outsell both her male counterparts and also the "plain Jane" females. I know there is nothing equitable, right or fair in this, but I've seen the results in different companies over many years - sorry

but this then brings in the question as to why all salespeople don't have film star looks. And this is simple: not all other things are ever roughly equal!!
