I couldn’t help thinking when I heard the news about poor little X Factor Joe getting blown out of top spot by some manky, punk (American!) re-release that it really is a sign of the times.

I mean which would you prefer, if offered it, to promote your product or service: -

1. 50 – 100 hours of prime time television in “advertorial” format with acknowledged expert and celebrity endorsements showing clearly why yours was better than 11 leading contenders, supported by regular general-public polling and votes (they pay to make) counted in millions, and then supported by millions of square miles of press coverage by all the leading popular titles, boosting and frenzy-feeding back into that loop?

Or

2. Some Facebook and Twitter “friends” suggesting yours as better?
