Salt.

My missus used to live in Minnesota - it snows a lot there - and, contrary to Health & Safety Britain guidelines, city-folk were actually obliged to clear the sidewalks in front of their houses and, normally, had a couple of bags of industrial sized salt in the garage (pron: Garaage) to make the job a good 'un.

Nah - sounds too much like common sense to have a chance over here. Oh well...

And anyone who has lived in a cold climate will tell you there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.

Like your comment on a previous thread, it's down to risk and reward and priorities. We could easily have all the equipment we need to deal with the few days of snow we experience now and again (in the south). But that would involve having zillions of quid's worth of snow clearing machinery and gritters laying around largely unused for the bulk of their lives. And unused automotive kit deteriorates rapidly over time - especially when it's exposed to lots of salt!

I recall the zillions that were spend of rail safety equipment after the Paddington Rail disaster. Almost unjustifiable when evaluated agianst the lives lost and the potential fututre loss of life that could be avoided by it's installation. The same money spent on road safety would almost certainly have generated a bigger payback. But politics and the need to assuage public opinion carried the day. Easy for me to say but I didn't lose a loved one.

We all have our agendas, some are more visible than others.
