Talking of IT dinosaurs (as I just was), there was a time (last century) when it took technology nearly 70 years to catch up with pure sci-fi, like H G Wells First Man in the Moon (1901) to Apollo 11 (1969).
Personally, I find that to be startlingly fast though! So imagine my surprise when I learned that we might now be getting down to around half that time-scale, as a firm favourite, The Babel Fish from total fantasist Richard Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (1978) – a fish you stuck in your ear to facilitate instant translation - looks set to be available “from all good retailers” any time soon…
Times Online – Google leaps language barrier with translator phone
(Perhaps Google is the new breed of tree-shrew-cum-mammal looking set to outstrip the dinosaurs by a mile?)
