Using your home as an office? Here's my free offer then

Mark Telford - An offer you can't refuse

Here's a funny story about everyday (modern) business people. I was sitting (not so quietly, as it happened) in the UK Business Network LinkedIn Group, minding my own business (literally). But all I did was to start a discussion with this offer...

I've got a great 'use of home as office' calculation spreadsheet, very straight forward. You may be able to claim more than you think. Please get in touch if you would like a copy.

...and earlier today the discussion kind of exploded, with member after member posting their email addresses and saying "Yes Please – send to bill.smith@homebusinessoffice.co.uk". Then in piles Publisher of ModernSelling.com – Neil Warren – who not only wants one himself, but is so enamoured with the whole "lead generation on business-social-media" thing that he practically insisted I put in an appearance here too!

So here I am, here's my companyTelford Associates, the link to me on LinkedIn is under my photo here, and I'd be happy to oblige if any of you sales professionals think you might not be getting your fair expenses for when you use your home as an office too. Just pop a note on here, or call me on 07540 667256.

Regards to all - Mark

    Guilty as charged your honour

Yes indeed folks, I did do that to him - and thanks for being such a good sport Mark.

To re-iterate, could I have mine at (neil.warren @ modernselling.com) please then - noting the crafty "disguise" of my email address so the spam-phishers can't scrape it off here.

    Thanks again - Neil

    Sorry about the delay!!

    Neil, Andy, Mike

Apologies for the delay. I've sent the spreadsheet to you all.

Please remember this is not the be all and end all, its a guide which gives you an idea of what you can claim. You need a decent accountant to advise you on exactly what you can claim...

    Employees included!

Employees as well as the self employed and company directors can make a claim for 'use of home as office'.

If you have to use your home as an office and its either part of your contract or has been specifically requested by your employer then you can claim.

Be reasonable in your claim and back it up with workings and it is likely to be accepted without query.

Remember you can claim retrospectively for up to 6 years.

HMRC is not having my money

Maybe I am naive but I've often felt that the benefits of home-working were so stacked in my favour that "expensing" my costs seemed churlish.

If however my employer can pass these costs on to HMRC I'd be much happier :-)

    So..."Yes please Mark" at bob.unsworth @ sky.com

    No time like the present

    It's on its way Bob.

It's not your employer passing the costs on, its you personally getting the cost of working from home (mortgage, light, heat etc) recognised and accepted as a tax deductible expense.

The 2011 tax year has ended so get those claims and tax returns in now.

Don't wait for the filing deadline, if you've paid too much tax get it back asap.

Feels much better in your pocket rather than the taxman's!

Dear Mark - Will HMRC still be OK?

I'm trying to be a bit "funny" or "witty" with my question / headline Mark, treating you as an Agony Uncle. Because the more I've looked at this, the more juicy it gets if I can get all 6 years back (don't enquire about my personal details though!).

It's going to be a good few £thousands if mine all pans out, so I was just being "concerned" about (my poor ex-lover - NOT) the HMRC, and whether s/he could afford the £millions your delightful little campaign here is going to relieve him/her of.

So don't feel obliged to answer Mark - just stick those claims in folks - it always was "your" money in the first place, and we're all in this together, as we're constantly reminded.

Put that cash to better use

Absolutely Neil, if the Government can waste £500 million on a census that few take seriously, then I (we) can make better use of a few £'00's or £'000's.

Anyone not sure about this...get in touch.

    Capital Gains implications?

Mark, I have no desire to rain on your parade (or anybody else's) but what are the capital gains tax implications of claiming expenses on your home office? A tiny part of my brain seems to think that you have to be a little careful or you are liable for capital gains on the portion of the house used when you come to sell. (Recognising that this is an unlikely scenario at the moment!)

  • img

    PPP and CGT eh?

    Neil

    Glad you've raised this.

Provided you don't claim 100% business use for part of your home (principal private residence), you won't be liable for capital gains tax on the business element.

Again, make sure your claim is reasonable and backed up by workings.

This is stressed in the spreadsheet.

See! It really, really works - and STILL going strong on your original LI post I notice Mark.

And if any of you good people (Bob, Nigel, Nick, Steven or Warren) have a LinkedIn profile, and are a bit "disappointed" by your grey-head profiles, just try the "login with Linkedin" option and all will be revealed.

    Business mileage

For all you owner managers who claim business mileage, remember that you can claim back the vat element.

For all employees - does your employer recover the vat?

No!!! Well get a claim in, you can claim retrospectively for up to four years.

    Interesting links & cold-call coincidences

I was just telephoned as a "cold call"...

    http://www.linkedin.com/groups/What-can-we-learn-from-1328087.S.51998408

...by a firm called "Tax Assist". There was nothing particularly "bad" about the call (apart from the fact that I was on the other line, so she firstly interrupted and then secondly I had to call back to see what it was about), but the upshot of course was...

"No thanks, I found a very helpful and "trusted" adviser online, which gets us back to...

    http://www.modernselling.com/news-and-events/webinar-corner/sellers-tale-eselling-book-workshop-webinar-discussion-tips-series-20114025.aspx

..what sellers should be thinking about doing, including those still phone-only cold-calling for tax-advice accountants.

Anyone paying too much tax? I can help...

Ok, not many takers at the moment from all you sales people who contractually use your home as a place of work.

I've recently submitted a return for a £1,000+ tax refund and am working on another which will be even bigger.

These are not exceptions. Please give me a call 07540 667256.

I'll know in the space of five minutes if I can help you.

    Home office tax spreadsheet

    Hi Mark,

    It ain't what you do...

...it's the way that you do it.

If you're submitting a claim make sure you get it done properly. It could get you more back than you expected and also save having HMRC queries to deal with.

The price I quote to do a return includes responding to all (if any) HMRC queries.
