Ferries: exposing air baggage charges.

With the news that budget airline Ryanair has introduced new baggage charges from the beginning of July, ferry companies are hoping to cash in with travellers to the near continent.

Britain’s ferry companies stepped up the war of words by stressing that they continue to take car passengers’ luggage for free this summer, while the Irish no-frills airline has increased baggage charges to coincide with the peak holiday period of July and August.

£200 extra

They say that Ryanair will charge £20 each way for its standard 15kg baggage limit, rising to £40 each way for a second suitcase case of 15kg. This means that a family of two adults and two children taking three suitcases, for example, would have to pay a total luggage charge of £200 for their return flight to their summer holiday destination.

Director of the Passenger Shipping Association, Bill Gibbons told ModernSelling.com: ‘This increase in the cost of checking in luggage with Ryanair comes as no surprise, as low-cost airlines continue to squeeze passengers for every penny. British holidaymakers are tired of endless charges and many are rediscovering that travel by sea is a fair, affordable and much more pleasant way to reach their destination.’
